The Bay Circuit Trail

The Bay Circuit Trail(BCT): It’s been my pleasure to be involved with many others in creating a 200 mile, non-motorized Boston area trail. This primarily off-road scenic walking trail arcs around Boston from Plum Island to Kingston Bay in thirty four communities. Since 1990 a group of organizations and individuals has worked in a fifty two town corridor between Route 128 and I-495 to connect open space reservations and existing local trails. The idea isn’t new – the proposal for a Bay Circuit Greenbelt actually dates from the nineteen thirties. The new term is “greenway” , a linked system of open space. For more details on the project’s history and status go to www.baycircuit.org. For a field test with family and/or friends of all ages, I make the following offer: Andover’s section of the BCT is about sixteen miles. Moor & Mountain is located five minutes from the approximate mid-section. With prior arrangement you can leave your car in our parking lot and be driven to a drop-off at either end. From the western end in Tewksbury it’s about a nine mile walk back to your car. From the eastern end in North Andover it’s about seven miles. Pack a lunch and visit fields, hills and wooded areas that rival those of New Hampshire and Maine.
